I used to live out east and I've always wondered how some of the more oddly named towns came to be. Does anybody know how some of the more weirdly named English/New England town's names were thought up?

Does anybody have any more entertaining ones to share?

Braintree is called that because it lies on the River Brain by a huge forest like area. Braintree is actually a very nice area of Essex. The name was then taken and there are two Braintrees in USA, one in Massachusetts and one in Vermont.
