It seems that we need them, but what would it be like if we didn't have them, at this point?

That's a very long term plan. Cultural diversity hinders a prosperous a totally global, structure of society. We haven't reach it yet. But, on a continental proximity, it already exist. In this case, EU and and United States. And in a lesser instance, the Arab States in North Africa and Middle East.

Why Not Possible?
Reason:
1. Cultural and Racial
2. Religious
3. Political Mindset

We would fail in the reasons that are mentioned above. In a similar way how Marx dreamed of a pure communist state existence and still on a process to a Utopian society for a very long time now, but much of those country with such governmental orientation find it difficult. Its the same way global unity difficulties would arise...

But Faith does deliver, And it is still possible...

I believe that this is another utopian idea, which sounds nice, but won't work, much like communism.
The guy who said that that is the way it used to be, and that national borders were a modern idea, ought to read his history again.
The only way that a world without nations could work is if we had a totalitarian government, with absolute control emanating from one entity. This means a total loss of the freedom which we and other nations take for granted. Yes, even other nations have some freedoms, we have more, but the few the other nations have, would also be gone.
People are naturally competitive, and each person is primarily interested in himself and his immediate group. This is human nature. If there is no possibility for dominance, most people will give up trying to do better, and will rely on the government to take care of them. Pretty soon the government will have nothing with which to do this.
The result will be that the bankers and big money people who are proponents of this idea, will have killed the "goose who laid the golden egg".
Some people will rebel, and for a while the government will kill or eliminate them in some way, but as with all totalitarian governments in history, the corruption at the top, due to people being people, and looking out for their own interests, will eventually weaken it sufficiently and the human spirit will once again emerge victorious.
Circumstances change, human nature doesn't.

I do it often. I bought this house built in 1912 and decorated it in that era. There is one of those tall, old radios in the living room but no TV. Since a computer is necessary for my work, I keep it set up in my bedroom closet so that I can shut it out of sight when I'm not working. And I've never had a mobile phone, ever. I do have a TV in my bedroom, but after next New Years when everything goes to HD and the old analog sets become useless, I'll be without a TV permanently. I refuse to throw out money on what has become trash now anyway. So I'm just not interested anymore. I bought a whole bunch of old radio programs and had my old Zenith radio (in the living room) fitted with a cd player so that I can play them through that radio and I'm just fine. I like to read also. Now if you ask me if I can do without a house phone, I'd say no. That is a necessary part of my life also. Listening to things allows my imagination to work and I enjoy using it far more than having a machine use it for me.

For the one`s that say "that`s the way it once was " ? There was only one time in the history of the earth that is true ! That was before the fall of Adam & Eve ! Today it would equal the same as putting a lion in with the sheep ; or as a better example notice what the lion that escaped from his cage at the San Fransico zoo did without "boundaries" ?

It would be my dream but it will never happen because of the selfish character of mankind for more power and to get power, you need food and to get food you need territory! I guess all creatures have an issue with territory, look at all the animals and ask yourself why! For us humans it doesn't stop there any longer unfortunately!
If we wouldn't have borders, we wouldn't have wars, wouldn't need visas but we would have to change our attitude towards life a lot!

No.
Borders say,"this is ours,that's yours."
Without borders the more advanced nations would be swarmed under with undocumented immigrants, demanding goods and services, schools, medical care and housing and unable or unwilling to pay for it.
Think of living in a large Apartment building, you've paid for a large nice apt and you've fixed it up ,made it comfortable.
Then the "Super"comes along and removes all the door locks and tells you "anyone wants in,you have to let them in,no exceptions".
How long would you have any privacy or any possessions?
Not even your bed would be your own.
Would you like that ?
That's why we have doors with locks and why we have borders.

Yes, society can function without national borders, it has for most of history. The nation state is a modern invention. I think a better question is, can global society function WITH national borders? Nation states deny people solidarity with all of humankind. They, by their very nature, must aim to become the strongest state or risk facing anniliation. If the nation state exists, so must war.

I must note here that the "nation" is synonymous with "state", i.e. a political association with effective dominion over a geographic area.

Communism world wide. It is the only way for Communism to work. If there was one government, then there would be constant strife about the world with different ideologies doing battle. Yet whom ever grows powerful enough would be just another dictator. Power corrupts, Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

I'm afraid not in near future. People can't respect others even with the borders.

Try this experiment. Knock on your neighbor's door and tell him that because you don't believe in borders you will live in his kitchen from now on. If he agrees to allowing that, then maybe we don't need borders, but to make this experiment valid you must do it several more times with several more neighbors, and to prove we don't need borders they all must willingly let you live in their kitchen. I think you will see that borders are needed...
