Also can you cut it back to the ground or not every winter?

And how will it come back?

One writer on this forum says that their silver lace vine grows about 45-50 ft per season in the New York City area. Most sites say it usually grows 20 feet in a single growing season. They cut it back very hard in early spring before it starts to leaf out - usually early to mid-March. " I cut it back to about one foot and found that it thrives (almost too much) with the very severe pruning...it will start shooting as soon as the weather warms up and will be 30-40 feet in no time".

It blooms on new growth of the season, so it's best to trim it in winter or early spring. You can cut it back as hard as you need to for size control. Cutting it back pretty hard usually makes it send up even more shoots from the ground. Keep in mind it may grow slowly the first year, more the second year, and take off in the third year like most vines tend to.

Here's a site with comments (which are mostly positive) about the vine. "This is a spectacular vine that blooms for weeks and provides shimmery white sprays of flowers. It grows very quickly but can sometimes be killed off during my harsh Wisconsin winters."

Silver-Lace Vine (Polygonum aubertii) produces clusters of small; white to greenish-white flowers in August and September, which turn pinkish at maturity and remain effective for a long time. The dense foliage is bright green. The vine is a rank grower and is becoming invasive in some areas. Once established, it may grow as much as 20 feet in a single season. It will require severe pruning each spring to keep it within bounds. It is adaptable to many soil types and is suitable for city conditions. It needs a sunny location.

An aggressive twining vine that, placed properly, makes an excellent screen or fence covering. Clusters of fragrant white flowers appear in Mid-season and can nearly cover this 20-30' grower.
