how can i increase my drawing skills?

so..

ive been into drawing for quite some time now and i just draw these monster things i made up and i cant seem to draw anything else i've bought lots of drawing books and read them but i cant get any better where do i go from here (some good practice techniques or ideas on how i can increase my skill (rapidly would be nice) and i dont even have to be pro id just like to think of something and be able to draw it , because whats happening right now is i think of something get to the paper and forget everything because im so concerned about trying to draw it and cant or ill keep erasing and give up (but dont tell me not to give up :P )

The way to be able to draw anything you happen to think of is...to increase your drawing skill. Yes, I know that was your question.

I think you may be having problems right now because your vision has advanced faster than your drawing capacity. This bothers you, but it is actually a good thing. It will help you to improve.

Try drawing from life. Set up a simple still life, or set up a mirror and draw your own face. Don't worry about erasing. Just put lines down over lines, and try to get the forms and shadows correct. Finish each drawing to the best of your present ability and then MOVE ON to the next one.

Yes, it can be tedious, and not nearly as interesting as monsters, but your drawing will improve in a few months. And that's pretty rapid.

A drawing class can also speed up the process.

Depends on how dedicated you are. If you're dedicated enough, buy/borrow Betty Edward's "Drawing on The Right Side of the Brain", and read all the relevant sections that talk about the difference between using your left brain to drawing and using your right brain to draw...hope you'll understand it. The ability to think about something and be able to draw it requires a kind of basic photographic memory, which is trained most effectively by doing the "right brain" exercises in the book.

If you don't want to get the book, practice forging signatures, or copy other people's handwriting, as closely as possible. Turn the signature/handwriting upside down, draw that, and then turn your drawing upside down to see how it looks. This helps a lot.

Lastly, always tell yourself you can do it. Look up Armin Mersmann. A few years ago I never thought i could draw like him. Now i'm pretty close

Art IS a talent but drawing is a skill..which is what the poster is asking about.

I'm not a virtuoso but, really drawing everyday will really help. Drawing exercises, drawing from life, sketching. Just practice as often as you can.

Art is a talent, not a skill. It's possible you have reached your potential as an artist and can go no further?

However, only you can decide if you've "peaked", and before you do, consider using different media (if you're using pencil now, switch to paint or charcoal) or different subject matter (if you're drawing people, switch to landscapes or abstract art). Perhaps you just haven't found the right approach.

If after switching up your habits and reading all the books you've found thus far still doesn't help, try switching to a different art form altogether (like photography or sculpting). Perhaps you haven't found the right muse yet!

In all cases practice does help. So give yourself time to learn.

Draw from life. Take a sketchpad and pens, go sit the yard and draw what you see. Draw your hand, your reflection ,your shoe, your cat sleeping......enjoy, and don't throw any drawings away! You will see them differently in an hour or a day. Have fun!!!

Well it comes from a lot of hard work and time. I started going to this art studio from when I was 4 till now and my artwork is very clearly better than all my peers. You need years and years of practise etc cuz art is not something you can learn overnight.

You need a really good book on techniques using pencil charcoal, pen & ink. Do every exercise thoroughly. Then go outside and draw what you see ..eg: trees, buildings, old buildings , faces ,,,anything you find interesting.
Concentrate on light & shade, perspective, lost and found edges and practice, practice, practice.

if you are beginning to draw then yes it's good to help copy pictures. wither they were photos or anime pictures. just don't' trace them you won't learn from that at all. it's good to find something you would like to draw. It's helped me get started, and i still do it to learn
