Read the book? I saw the film! It was about an FBI agent who posed as a cook in a gravy making competition to infiltrate a criminal gang. It was called "Miss Congealiality".

I read "The History of Glue" It was a bit tacky in the middle but eventually I couldn't put it down.

Have not seen that one, but I read "Run to the Out-house" by Kenny Makeit, and the follow up book by his brother Willie Makeit.
