During the War of 1812, the British successfully invaded the U.S. via the Chesapeake Bay. On their march north, they "torched" Washington DC burning everything except one building--the Library of Congress (I think..could be wrong). The White House was left a shell.

Later that night, by Providence some would say, a rather large series of thunderstorms doused the fire and disrupted the British march, forcing a retreat.
