Hey

The trachea is full of millions of cilia. When you breath in most dust particles are trapped in you nasal hair. However alot of particles still manage to get in, if you breath from your mouth then even more get in. The trachea is covered in sticky mucous and as air enter the trachea the particles of dust, dirt, microbes and even airborne bacteria stick to the mucous. The cilia's function is like to sweep the mucous up to the top of the trachea. Once reaching the top the mucous is swallowed where the high pH of the stomach kills any bacteria present.

The cilia are essential and without it the trachea would be clogged up in no time. Cilia isn't present in all body tissues so i'm not quite sure what that means in you question.

I hope that helps

The cilia are responsible for removing unwanted particles from the airways leading to the lungs. The particles settle in the mucus lining and without the cilia action the lungs would become clogged up. It is worth noting that when you smoke, the effect is to stop the cilia from working and so the mucus builds in the lungs. This might explain the smoker's cough in the morning, since no smoke went down trachea whilst smoker sleeps so the cilia have time to recover. Also, the uninformed smoker will think that smoking "cures" his/her cough!

It moves mucus in the throat up and out of the airway / food tract. TINY small 'hairs' inside the throat move like a snakes belly,. moving any excess mucus upwards to be expelled by other means.
