Males do not "dominate" females in the animal kingdom -- but they do fight and compete with one another, for access to females.

Dominant. Generally yes. Mostly due to size. It depends on certain factors, season, food affability, reproduction, territory, inter and intra-species interactions, and population. All these thing effect dominance.
Lions form prides. Many people think that the female lion rules the pride. A dominate female will rule the family unit. It is the male that protects the pride and keeps dominace factors in check. Lion prides are unique in the wildlife world. Dominance is actually more shared between the dominate male and female.
Elephants have a shared dominance. As do wolfs.
Among tigers it is the male that dominates.

I think you mean dominant, and that is how I will answer the question.
It depends on what animals. With lions the females pretty much run the show, they raise the childen, hunt for food, and keep the pride together. If intruders come in the female lions fight them too. The male lions figh each other, but they do not hunt or kill anything except each other. They are there for mating purposes only. I've heard it was the same with wolves.
The male seahorse carries the babies around after the female seahorse has them.
I think that male and female animals have a give and take relationship, much like human relationships.

Dominant?
It depends on your perspective.
A lion generally leaves all the dirty work to his females.
A stallion guards his females, willing to fight off other predators should they infringe on his territory.
These are just two examples of poligamous relationships in the animal kingdom where the male has more importance than the females.
Once men would pursue the female, showering them with gifts and paying for everything on dates.
The opposite now holds true, something similar to what goes in the animal kingdom.
Probably the Woman's lib movement caused this change in our social order.
