I have two rabbits which I keep in seperate cages because they do not get along. the other night when I was feeding them I gave one the end of one bag of pellets and opened a new bag for the other. The next day, the one that ate from the new bag of food passed away. I can not say for sure that it was from the food because it was too expensive to have the necessary tests done to my rabbit but it sure seems that way. My other rabbit is still doing fine. I am now REALLY parinoid about feeding my other rabbit. I have switched to a rabbit pellet that I buy from a feed store that feeds the rabbits they sell the same kind but am still really scared. does anyone know what could have caused this or have any suggestions?

It would depend on many things.

Perhaps this rabbit was older, or easier to frighten & has been scared by a noise in the night.

Perhaps it caught VHD - if a rabbit isn't vaccinated this can kill in 24 - 48 hours with very few outward signs of illness.

Perhaps it's a genetic thing; something like liver failure or a weak heart.

There's a lot of possibilities, too many to list, but good move with the food. Perhaps contact the company that makes the food and explain the situation - they may pay for a post mortem to find out whether it was the new bag of food so that they can warn owners who haven't yet opened a bag with the same batch number on it.

First, please invest a little more in food and buy American. China pet foods can kill.

Pellets or oats must be given to rabbits, horses and fish very caefully. I found that out when I fed my goldfish too many pellets.

The thing that happens is that the pet eats until he is fairly full, and with moist foods that is ok. But oats and pellets are dry and compact and they swell when the animal drinks water. This swelling can be so much that it bloats the animal and kills him.

I'm sorry you lost your pet rabbit. Feed less pellets next time and soak them in water so you can see the real; amount your pet is eating. Also feed American foods.

Good luck!

rabbits can die from sudden heart attacks. The food would make your bunny ill but not kill it straight away
