Pao has the best starting references. Start by asking your older relatives, then first cousins, second and so on.
Ask about the provinces they came from, as these changed throughout the years and then, the churches, they're the best but, be ready to pay. They all want a gratuity for helping.
It took me seven years to go back 350 years in Poland.

I suggest the Mormon Family History Center. Since the LDS believe in salvation for deceased family members -- a tougher version of Catholics' praying for dead relatives in Purgatory -- they maintain the best geneology records around, and they don't exclude Romanians.
