I may not know how the standing work but both the Lakers and Hornets have a better record then them and they are still in fifth place. What gives?

1. San Antonio 19 7 - Southwest (leader)
2. Dallas 19 9 - Southwest (second best record)
3. Phoenix 19 9 - Pacific (leader)
4. Denver 16 11 - Northwest (leader)
5. L.A. Lakers 18 10 - Pacific
6. New Orleans 17 10 -Southwest
7. Portland 16 12 - Northwest

*nuggets are 4th place not 5th
its because they are leading the northwest division. the way the playoff standings work is that the each division leader and the team with the second best record gets the top 4 seeds. so even though the lakers have the better record, they are relegated to fifth because a) they are not leading their division (phoenix is), and b) they don't have the second best record in the conference (dallas has that). in case you're also wondering why dallas has the number 2 seed even though the suns are leading pacific, its because dallas has won their first contest giving dallas the tie-breaker.

No Denver is in 4th place

They're the leader of their Northwest Division

There is a rule in NBA playoff seeding where a division winner can't be seeded lower than no.4

SO even though from another division within the same conference teams like the Lakers have a better record, the Nuggets still get a higher seeding because they're the division leader

according to you should they be in better or worst position. if it's better, i think it's going to be difficult for them to past teams like the Mavs, Spurs, and Suns.then, they'll have to fight the lakers, Jazz and other rising forces for the remaining spots for the 4th and 5th place.(the west has serious competition ths year).worst, well i don't think so, because denver has two stars that can put up good numbers and some good back ups that can provid average numbers.so, they should be able to maintain this place up to the end of regular season.

Because they are division leaders. Division leaders get one of the top four spots in the Conference standings.
