Absolutely not. Zoos are vital for education and conservation. Without captive breeding, many endangered species would now be extinct - for example, the golden lion tamarin, red wolf and Przewalski's horse. I am not for a moment suggesting that we should stop trying to protect animals' natural habitats, but if the tiger were to become extinct in the wild (which sadly seems quite likely in the near future), zoos and wildlife parks will have preserved the species for future generations, with enough genetic diversity that the possibility for reintroduction to the wild exists. Would you rather the species disappeared forever?

It's true that captive conditions in the past were often cruel, the animals being kept in cramped cages and so on, but today's zoos are carefully regulated - the animals are kept in conditions as close as possible to their natural habitat, with plenty of space, good diets and immediate medical care if they need it. Captive-bred animals have known nothing else, so it is not as if they miss the wild - they are certainly not unhappy in captivity. The tiger that mauled those people was not 'insane', it was simply following its natural instincts.

Define 'cruel'. The fact is, of the 5 tiger species, we only have a few left and some are only viable (population wise) in zoos. Zoos with little land and little environmental enrichment can cause animals to exhibit cage behavior (pacing, weaving, etc). This has nothing to do with the escape and attack. Any animal which is in regular contact with people will lose their fear of people which would cause the animal to attack without fear (as this tiger did). This has nothing to do with whether zoos are inherently 'cruel'. The fact is that a substantial number of animals are facing extinction due to loss of habitat and poaching. Many of these animals would already be extinct and many more will probably become extinct in the wild before the problem is rectified (if it ever is). So if you want to be part of the solution, make a real committment to saving the environment and to creating sustainable economies for third worlds (no way to stop poaching if people can't feed their families) rather than complaining. The zoos aren't the problem, and the solution is not to blame them. This is another case of people thinking about problems that are not simple and attempting to find a simple (and blamable) solution.

I dont understand no remember in case you are able to generalize, yet thats no longer unavoidably the case.some animal activists would say so, yet going by employing their good judgment, the very concept-approximately zoo is cruelty. There are some zoos that are fairly money-minded and that they are drawn to attracting travelers particularly than looking after animals nor paying those perplexing toiling zoo keepers.on the smae time there are zoos which keeps animal risk-free practices through fact the 1st priority, considered one of those cages , usual maintenance of cages.some zoos be sure that animals are no longer deprives of their organic habitat by employing having the zoo in a organic ecosystem.Zoos are mandatory to offer human beings information approximately animals. So its trues that some zoos are cruel even though it does no longer be ordinary to generalize.concerning China, i could believe you, they dont care a rattling approximately animals.I dont would desire to problematic how cruel they may be.

NO especially modern zoos.
Tahilia the tiger attacked because it was scared at being in a strange environment outside its cage. With screaming running people exciting & terrifing it.-- tahila would not of attacked for food or revenge against people as she was zoo bred not wildborn. ---Think of large wolf type dogs you have been near compaired to wildborn wolves seen on tv. Both are happy in enviroment born into, but would be very scared & agressive if suddenly switched espesualy with lots of screeming people near by.
The tiger eswcaped from an open or damaged gage not because the cage made it insane.
Most people who deeply love animals (including myself) were exposed to zoo, circus & wildelife docomentries as children & so started lifelong consern / love of wildlife!!!
Without animal ambasaadors in zoos & wildlife warriors like Steve Irwin, David Attenburra then less people in the future would care to love & protect wildlife & their habitate

look i think that some zoos can be cruel, but some are great facilities where people can go and be educated about things that they normally wouldn't see. i mean not everyone can go to siberia and see a tiger, but just about anybody can go to a zoo and see one and be educated about how they are endangered and need our help. so no zoos are not bad. i personally wanna be a zookeeper oneday working with big cats and reptiles so that i can help people realize how amazing the animals are. and that they are not horrible killing machines, but that they are beautiful amazing creatures that need our respect and help to ensure that they do not go extinct.

Do you think that the mauling tiger was insane? If you came across a tiger in the wild do you think it will sit down and have tea with you? That tiger was doing what tigers do. Having a 300 lb killing machine in the custody of people that make barely over minimum wage is insane.

Yes. At the very least, don't help support zoos by attending.
