If you could choose between spending Christmas Day with your family (wife and four young, gorgeous, extremely well-behaved children!) or going to work with the lure of triple-time pay, which would you choose?
Financial situation: not rich, not desperately poor either. Own home, no mortgage (paid off), a little credit card debt (not excessive), no other loans or large bills, only a modest income on a week to week basis now though.
Would you stay with your family?
Or is the lure of triple-time pay really that strong for you?
Please tell me what you think you would honestly choose in that situation. Work hours mean not home till 9pm (kids in bed normally at 8.00 - 8.30)
What would you do?
All answers very greatly appreciated. Honesty please! Thank you!

I'd stay at home.
You will never recover lost time with family. Money will just be spent and then it's gone.
No one on their death bed ever said, "Gee, I wish I'd have spent more time at the office."
Best Wishes

The question is somewhat an oversimplification. When you've already bitten the bitter fruit of becoming a 'Pro', you will find yourself being asked by TPTB to handle holidays. The money is not as important as the position which makes one the go to person. Triple time is a considerable incentive, pays for all the Xmas overage, but it won't balm your feelings of being tossed to the waves, so he can do the companies plumbing.I suggest, with much restraint, that you get a time share, or reservations for the holidays near one of your parents, or other relative, closing the family Xmas loop, which also gets you out of the city. Make the plans now, get ready now. When it's Dec 15th,2008, scram. Turn off the cell phones, disconnect call forwarding. Take the long route. If the children are mature enough, send them by train to the relatives, and drive your husband nuts, show off your happiness with him. In other words, put up counter incentive, which is positive, he could end up with a lip stick ring, on I-35. Plan, plan, plan, have him put in the request now, a year in advance. Good luck

Operative words:- "If you could choose...".......IF??????? (meaning that I (hubby) have a choice?????
Throughout my working life I've always been with my family at Christmas......except once. That was because of circumstances that couldn't be postponed, transferred, substituted or cancelled...I had NO choice in the matter.
BUT, I more than made up for my absence afterwards.
If there's any way that I can avoid working on 'family days' - I will move a mountain to do so.
In your case, your husband's triple time for 1 day is equivalent to double time for 1 & 1/2 days. Regardless of your financial situation, if I was your hubby, I'd prefer to work 1 & 1/2 days some other time, and spend Christmas Day with my wife and children.
Santa only comes once a year!!!!!!!!!

Family should always come first. With that said I have worked on Christmas Day because I needed the money for my family. If you don't need the money then stay home with your family.

It's only 3 days..... if it was 3 months I'd definitely shift my celebration and would go to get all that $$$$, even if I wasn't desperately poor. But for a triple-time pay...... I guess I'd stay home.

$!! my husband has worked on thanksgiving and Christmas for the last 16 years. we have 5 children. we just change the day of celebration. hubby is at work now on a 24 hour shift as a paramedic. we talked on the phone alot. anyway, all kids are on break and they dont have to get up in the morning, so let them stay up. whats it gonna hurt? for us its just being together. it doesnt matter what day it is. we still celebrate as society does, just a day before or a day after. no one has died yet, or lost out on anything special. work it out. i still pulled off santa this morning, dad went to work, and will celebrate the rest tomorrow.

Family no doubt. Work is overrated and to many Americans work to much without taking time for the family. Family should always be 1st

There's no way on earth I would work Christmas day! I only have the one young son, but wouldn't miss the most exciting day of his year. Childhood is too short to miss out on watching them grow.
