I would pick Resident Evil. The storyline has been great throughout every game. If you were lucky enough to have bought a gamecube then you were able to play RE:Zero. Mario runs a very close second but was edged out because RE is horror game.
Metroid is not bad but faded out for awhile and made a return but just didnt have the same affect.
Never played poke'mon-Yugioh so I cant comment on them.
GTA gets old after about 10 minutes of playing.
Halo was an ok game, but I was impressed by 2 or 3. It has an online following but there are way better online games out there.

The only serious contenders I see here are Super Mario, Metroid, and Halo.
Super Mario
Pros: Many games, nearly everyone has played them, been around for over 20 years
Cons: Only single player (except for galaxies, which is kind of 2 player)
Metroid
Pros: Innovative game designs, been around for nearly 20 years
Cons: Single Player
Halo
Pros: Great multiplayer game, lots of replayability
Cons: Relatively new series, softcore gamers need not apply
Overall, I would say Mario is the best because it appeals to the broadest audience. All the mario games are great (except perhaps mario 2), and I don't know anyone that doesn't like them. Mario 3 is probably the best game for NES.

Well it's not on here but Metal Gear Solid series is the best because of character depth, story line and diologue. David Hayter, the man who plays Snake is now famous and rich. But on your list probably Resident Evil because of the history...it started back in the 80's and hasn't slowed down since, making movies, action figures and what not. The story has always been great and it is the first games in history that made people jump out of their seats when Nemesis broke through the window.

Out of this list, I would have to pick Super Mario. It is the best classic game by far. People have been playing Mario wayyy before any of these other series were ever created.

Out of the ones you have listed, I'd pick Resident Evil. I enjoy classic horror games, the stories are interesting, and I love the action.
My favorite game series of all time would be Final Fantasy, because the storylines are absolutely EPIC. My 2nd favorite would be the God of War series, and 3rd - Legend of Zelda.
