good old plain baking soda and white vinegar, I have not used rinse aid well since I have this new dish washer and it is 5 years old and I think about 2 before that and it is fine.
If you do want to use a dishwashing powder and it is because of the price you really only need a teaspoon two at the most to wash your dishes as it is highly toxic and it cleans it.

add a small amount of downey to the washer and use laundry soap,
I have found that liquid soap for dish washers work better, and cause less problems than the powder,

Why would you own a dishwasher and not buy detergent made for it?
I will never understand how wacky people can be.

you can destroy a dishwasher very fast by using something other than granular dishwasher detergent. However, you can try white vinegar in the rinse cup; and some baking soda instead of the washing granules. but I wouldn't do it.
