As a Royals fan I'm going to say George Brett as a hitter whom hit .311 193hr and 851rbi from 1980-1989 including a league high of 1980 of .390 24 hr 118rbi. He is also the only hitter to win batting titles in 3 separate decades. for a pitcher I would say Jack Morris of the Tigers who led all pitchers in the 80s with 160 plus wins.

Mike Schmidt was hands down the best player of the 1980's.

He had the most HR (313), RBI (929) and highest OPS (925) in the decade.

He also had 8 Gold Gloves and won the NL MVP 3 times.

As far as pitcher, I'll agree with the last answerer and say Jack Morris. Won 162 games and was very durable, throwing at least 235 innings 8 seasons in the 80's.

The best pitcher was without a doubt Nolan Ryan. He was one of the best pitchers of all time, and the 80's were right in his prime.

Best hitter, I think George Brett. He was very underrated, but a very good hitter. He didn't have as much pop as some of the bigger names, but he always had good at bats and hit for a high average.

Hmm well best power hitter would have had to be Mike Schmidt but the best pure hittter would have had to have been Ricky Henderson with his on base % of over 400. Best Pitcher would have to be Jack Morris. 162 wins is pretty damn good.

Hitter - Statistically the best hitter (avg) from that era would be Tony Gwynn batting .338 career, or slugger Willie Stargell with a career .529 slugging percentage - but my choice would be Schmidt who has a .527 slugging percentage and .267 avg.

Pitcher - I would probably take Ryan or Carlton - with a nod toward Hershiser.

I love Nolan Ryan, but Jack Morris dominated the 1980's. He should be in the hall of fame. The veterans will put him in.
