Wondering if I should visit the Yucatan with a rental car.

1. Is there extra costs not specified in the rental (via the internet) that I should pay overthere?
2. Is it secure to visit alone the Yucatan?

1. I have not encountered any extra fees other than those quoted on the Internet. About insurance, you need Mexican insurance. You can buy it when you rent the car or if your credit card offers insurance on car rentals then make sure you check with them that includes Mexican insurance. It also doesn't hurt to print that part of your credit card's user agreement as proof that you have Mexican insurance. In the unfortunate event that you did get into an accident you need to prove that you can pay (or have insurance) to cover the costs of any damage you may have caused. Otherwise the police can hold you until that is established.

2. Yes it's safe to visit the Yucatan alone, personally I would say the exact opposite of what the first poster said, I would say that Cancun would be the worst place to drive (the most traffic in the Yucatan for sure). Once you are outside of Cancun then the driving is pretty straight forward. Cancun has the most traffic and I would say taxi or bus around Cancun but drive to other places.

Watch out for topes, try to drive in day light.

Talk with your hotel concierge service. A day rental is pretty easy to do through your hotel. FYI: They drive either really fast or really slow in that region. The Yucatan is a beautiful place and if you stay in the tourist regions you will be just fine.

The bus system is an excellent way to get around and inexpensive. Car rentals you will need to purchase car insurance. If you are in an accident, the rules are very different in Mexico.

i've got shipped my motor vehicle from Panama city Florida to Progreso with Linea and that they do no longer enable passengers. it is likewise restrictive in that your motor vehicle would desire to be shipped empty (thoroughly empty) with no longer something extra beneficial than a million/4 tank of gasoline or much less. i think of you're extra effective off employing than flying and renting a motor vehicle, whether you would be able to desire to locate a decrease priced motor vehicle condo, shall we say $450 a month that continues to be over $4k on your 9 months. And forget approximately approximately paying for a motor vehicle here they're plenty extra high priced than in the US. For employing risk-free practices, rigidity in the day gentle and you'd be superb. The roads are very good from Matamoros to Tampico, ok from Tampico to Veracruz and extremely good from Veracruz all a thank you to Merida. i for my section think of that once you look at the fees and regulations you will locate that employing is the ideal way.
