Christmas is the easiest time for giving. Organizations set it up so that ordinary people can answer their call to participate to help the needy. Also, people want and hope for gifts at Christmastime.
Yes, charities like the Salvation Army operate all year round, but we're most aware of them at Christmas. In the novel A Christmas Carol, Scrooge's nephew Fred observed that Christmas is the "only time of year" when men and women willingly open up their hearts to be more generous and full of good wll toward others.

Oh, no, they don't think that - it's just that if they give any other time it could take up time and money they might not have. Around CHristmas you more than likely get a break. And often times, it's because somebody else is giving them something, and they have to give something in return as to not to look like a jerk. I try to give all the time. Be it time, money, pencils, a shoulder to cry on... it doens't really matter to me what other people give. Just so long as they have an intention to share.

I know there are some people like that, but I am very fortunate. Most of the people I have for friends & relatives "give" to others, including the less fortunate, year round. Besides the things we do for each other; we also do volunteer work for our local churches, hospital, scouts & schools. We donate fresh veggies from our home gardens to the local food pantry, our children's out grown clothes & toys to the local homeless shelter several times a year....you know, that sort of thing.
.
I think that if you stopped and thought about it... you would see that most of the folks you know also "give" year round.
They just go about it with less fan fare.
