Yes money was tight and yes I knew it. I knew that if I broke anything I wasn't getting another so I was careful with my things. I may not have had a lot of stuff but I had what I needed and I appreciated what I had.

So many people these days have so much and they don't appreciate a bit of it. I'd rather have had less and learn gratitude than have it all and learn greed.

We didn't really understand that money was tight. Mom always made sure we had plenty to eat, decent clothes to wear and a roof over our heads. It wasn't until High School that I realized how bad things were when I was not able to get any of the extras for graduation. I worked every summer from the time I was 13 to earn money for school clothes. None of us thought too much about it. We were a big family and were all pretty close so we didn't understand that money was tight. I imagine the only young people today who can relate to money being tight are actually very poor and the folks don't have a credit card they can use to get whatever they might need instead of doing without.

My parents never said "We're broke" like we seem to tell our kids, but they mentioned the bills there were to pay whenever we didn't seem to understand why they couldn't buy something. It sure didn't seem like money was tight back then, but it's entirely possible that my mind was on other things (like surviving my childhood!). I don't think many kids understand how even "household finances" work. I've got a 16 year old stepson that I still think is completely oblivious to how many bills a person can have just to get by in life, even without credit cards and financing things like a living room set, etc. I think my one of my 11 year old sons has a better idea of it all than my stepson, but my other 11 year old has no grasp on money at all except that it should be spent! LOL

Yes I come from a family of 7 kids and we lived on a few measely dollars a week but my Mother worked miracles providing the proper nutrition and clothing while my Dad worked hard just trying to survive but we kids had no idea how poor we were and as I look back on it I realize just what a struggle it must have been for our parents but somehow we all survived pretty good.

Yes, money was very tight.
And yes, I did know. How did I know? My mother was a single parent trying to raise three children on her own...she was always working 2 or 3 jobs at a time...

Money was tight, but I guess that we didn't really care about it. We all lived a rich full life without the dough!
