The random access memory (RAM) is used to process current information and run current programs. The hard drive is used to store the bulk of the information on a computer. When a program is run, it may pull up infomation from the hard drive or a disk, then process that according to the commands you give it. The more RAM, the faster the programs, internet downloads, and the computer in general will run.

For the processor and motherboard to process information, the RAM is a place where memory is stored temporarily. You could potentially do this with a hard drive, and in some cases when older computers used virtual memory, it was effective, but it is so stinking slow it is crazy. So you need ram because of its quick access and speedy processing without having to send things through a hard drive. With all modern operating systems though, RAM is required.

It stores temporary program informations, like windows is an OS and needs other programs to make it work so the OS stores these information in the RAM.
And more information it can hold, more programs it is capable of running.

hard drives are WAAAAY too slow. RAM is extremely fast memory used to run multipul operations.

If you use up all your RAM it will tap into your hard drive, but its SO freaking slow that it isn't a good option for every day use...
