Words are blunt tools. The word 'American' and the word 'Patriot' cannot be used well as adjectives, because everyone has a very different internal understanding, imagery, or idea related to the words.
Patriotism is a (blind) support for the Fatherland. The word 'American' has negative connotations to people all over the world.
In short, I don't like the word American, or Patriot. I would prefer to avoid these nouns, especially if I were born in America or lived in America. These adjectives have a very negative meaning outside the 'home' region.
I'm 'British', or 'English', but primarily I am simply Me. It's tough to find words to describe yourself which have the same meaning to other people.
To avoid eliciting more biased reactions from these more common words, when people ask me where I am from, I tell them the name of my home county. Really, people are only so interested in where you come from so that they can help their own tendency to categorise and compartmentalise thinking, and so promote ignorance and bigotry.

I'd use American, I don't care what the rest of the world thinks, they seem pretty ignorant of our culture and ideals anyways. They will always hate us, until they are invaded, then we are the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Although it is old, Samson is the best word for America.
The Cartoon of Samson and his family is quite reflecting the life and character of Americans.
