If u would ask me then i will suggest u to go for Complete Reference but this book has some disadvantages that it use to cover some of the topics which are discarded form JAVA and are no longer used at cooperative level like APPLETS etc. Each book has his its own significance and standards. I am giving u the list of best books for JAVA

1. A Programming Guide to JAVA Certification------By Khalid Mughal (Best Books in Java Both for beginners and expert)

2. SUN Certification Programming for JAVA 5 _ SCJP -------- Kathy Sierra (Best beginners and professionals)

3. Head First in JAVA -------- Kathy Sierra (Best beginners only)

4. Complete Reference in JAVA 6 (Beginners only)

If you are looking for a book with key factors like validity, credibility, accuracy and details, which teaches you features of the language, I would recommend:

1-Core Java (Volume I & II)
By: Cay S. Horstmann & Gary Cornell
Published By: SUN MicroSystems

and if you need more technical details, and you are already familiar with Java, I highly recommend:

2- The Java Programming Language
by Ken Arnold, James Gosling and David Holmes

The first book is written and published by SUN Microsystems, the creator of Java.
And the second one is written by the father of Java, James Gosling.

I suggest you "Think Java" by Allen B. DOWNEY. This book is essential for beginners, the author is very explicit. In this book you will find exercises after almost every chapter. Give it a try if you are new to java programing

Dont go for heavy books "Complete Reference" and "Sun Java Tutorial". They are good for reference like a dictionary but not for the beginner.

Whenever I have to learn a new technology, I go for a book like
"Learn Java in 24 hours" or "Learn Java in 21 days" to get a taste of the technology and then dig deep from there.

Java is huge and you will get frustrated if start with a huge book.

If you can afford go for the video trainings
http://www.vtc.com/program.htm

BTW start with Standard Java first then more to Enterprise Java.

O'Reilly's "learning Java" by P. Niemeyer is pretty good and carefully written. There are zillions of Java books, but O"Reilly has the best selection, esp for beginners and the price is right.
