Well, I was born with hydrocephalus, and my parents paid $15,000 (I think?) on my surgery four years ago (which was obviously not my first)....My first was probably in the ballpark, there.

Wow!!! That's alot of money. Medicaid might be able to pay the bill however, the only way that you will know for sure is by calling the office. I am sorry to hear about your premature baby.. I know the feeling because my middle son was premature and he had to stay in the hospital for about 3 mth's and it was a nightmare for me because everyday I thought that I would have recieved bad news that he was not going to make it. I never got that phone call and he is now 8 yrs. old and doing well. Good Luck to you!!!

I hope your little one is doing better now. Having a child with a deformity is a challenge. Best of luck to both of you. The other posters are right...$1300 for 3 weeks is like a freebie. Preemie care is VERY expensive...that would be the cost for from 1-3 days. Call the hospital and ask them what medicare did and did not cover. If the $1300 is what you owe, ask them for a payment plan. Tell them what you can afford....even it if is only $50 a month. Hospitals are good about accepting payments. Our local hospital gives 25% discounts before the end of every fiscal quarter and 50% off if you pay by the end of December. They do this so their books will show the best financial picture possible.

They should cover it, if you get the bill take it to the social services office and they will resubmit it so that you don't have to pay it. In general, the following services are paid for by Medicaid, but some may not be covered for you because of your age, financial circumstances, family situation, transfer of resource requirements, or living arrangements. Some services have small co-payments. These services may be provided using your Medicaid card or through your managed care plan if you are enrolled in managed care. You will not have a co-pay if you are in a managed care plan.
smoking cessation agents
treatment and preventive health and dental care (doctors and dentists)
hospital inpatient and outpatient services
laboratory and X-ray services
care in a nursing home
care through home health agencies and personal care
treatment in psychiatric hospitals (for persons under 21 or those 65 and older), mental health facilities, and facilities for the mentally retarded or the developmentally disabled
family planning services
early periodic screening, diagnosis, and treatment for children under 21 years of age under the Child/Teen Health Program
medicine, supplies, medical equipment, and appliances (wheelchairs, etc.)
clinic services
transportation to medical appointments, including public transportation and car mileage
emergency ambulance transportation to a hospital
prenatal care
some insurance and Medicare premiums
other health services
If you are eligible for Medicaid, you will receive a Benefit Identification Card which must be used when you need medical services. There may be limitations on certain services.
For you to use your Benefit Identification Card for certain medical supplies, equipment, or services (e.g., wheelchair, orthopedic shoes, transportation), you or the person or facility that will provide the service must receive approval before the service can be provided (prior approval).
Best of luck to you and your baby!!!

So did medicaid already cover everything of the $13,000 and left you with the remaining 10% ($1300) People who have insurance - and pay for it - typically co-pay about that for a full term birth.

Medicaid should cover it. You need to call and see if they've filed that portion with Medicaid. Typically, they cover 100 %

Yes. Don't pay a dime. If you have to fight for it, fight for it. Don't give in no matter what. I know that a child on Medicaid who got cochlear implants which costs $40,000.
