The Postal Service removes collection boxes that are not to be used anymore, and any mail found inside is collected and turned in for processing. Nothing to worry about there.

It happens all the time that people drop mail (or other things) into a collection box that they need to get back. There are phone numbers on the labels affixed to the boxes for you to call for assistance in retrieving those items. There are also collection times posted on the labels, and if you can call before that next collection time, finding what you put in there will be a lot easier.

A number of times in my career, I have been stopped before dumping the mail I've collected upon return to the office, so that my mail could be searched for a letter that someone forgot to include a payment, or forgot to address, or some other reason. We take care of it.

A box out of order would be removed. If you drop something in and want it back, don't expect to be able to.
