I remember groups like Nirvana, AIC, STP, Motley Crue, Poison, etc. ruled. Now we have sorry bands like My Chem. Romance, The homos Boys (I don't know, LOL) It's all just a bunch of cry babies. The best band of late I've heard, Finger eleven and Alter Bridge, but AC/DC, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, etc., still rule in my book. Good strong lyrics, a good beat and will take you for a ride!!

Good Question. I enjoy coming across questions like this. Makes me think that maybe not EVERYONE has lost their minds.. haha.
I realize that style is always continuesly changing, but I also see changes for the worst. New generations aren't open minded and are raised on music of today; Which is dreadfully sad. Rock n Roll brought with it... inspiration, fun, upbeat, wild and craziness, intense rock riffs with slamming drums. "Emo" brought with it...umm...whinny, selfish, spoiled bratts who want to cry about the lives they haven't yet lived. I can't even begin to tell you just how annoying it is to see people say that the rock of today is great and BETTER than the rock of yesterday. I do understand that most people like to be apart of the "in" crowd and fit in with what is currently "hip" but seriously, come on.. that was a great excuse about 10 years ago when technology wasn't as high end as it is now.. but today music in its entirety is in reach for everyone, everywhere you look, so open your ears and listen! The problem here is ignorance. You would think that we would be in a time now that the greatest music would be blasting on the radio because of all the resources available, but unfortunately we don't.
I'm not going to keep ranting and raving because I guess it just makes me sound old. Haha. Fallout Boy will never be Aerosmith. Passion is gone but it lives on through the hits of the TRUE classic rock days... so CRANK IT UP!
BAAAANG YOUR HEAAAADDD!!!

Around the late 80s, there was a resergence of producers that would "create" an artist, much like Elvis was created by "Colonel" Tom Parker (although Parker did buy Elvis's contract with another studio before he was really famous). The reason they did this was to control most of the generated profits. Producers were not really looking for new talent and when somebody did emerge, other producers just got their acts to copy the sound. Notice the top acts are mostly just individuals and group singers, not bands. That's the reason why.
It takes a lot of money up front to make a band look large even before they sell their first record. It also takes money looking for talent. This requres a promoter and like i said, the promoters make more money producing their own acts rather than promote somebody else's act.
The good bands are underground. Many of the better ones do promote themselves on the net.

The rock/glam look of the late 80s wasn't murdered by Cobain & Co. (mind ya, I was a metal fan then!). The rock/glam look & culture was getting pretty stagnant, repetitive, & clique-ish by '91. It had a good run. The grunge thing came along as 'something completely different' (hell, an 'alternative') but even it got stagnant, repetitive, & clique-ish when the dregs who had copied the hair metal look years earlier started to switch over to flannels & looking like they hadn't bathed in days. Its a process now. The music industry, never the most imaginative bunch, signed on a bunch of acts who imitated the successful ones. Eventually, to make it easier on the industry, it started to sign (& sometimes manufacture) acts that were pre-packaged for easier marketing. Whether the acts had talent was irrelevant b/c these new acts practically had a built-in short shelf life. Kind of a good thing for the industry b/c people are now practically pre-conditioned to always need new stimulation very often. The imaginative, talented acts were left in the cold to be discovered by restless music fans who happened to stumble upon 'em. Don't worry about rock. It always gets counted out but always bounces back. Just don't look for it on MTV, commercial radio, & any other 'industry approved' media. Nirvana? Cobain french kissed a shotgun G&R? Axl believed his own press & killed the band that made "Appetite..." Metallica? They evolved into the band they are. Just the same, their once-fringe music became mainstream. A double blow! Who killed Cobain? My would-be babe Courtney!!

What happened to good rock - well unfortunately pop and rap exploded onto the scene and rock got kinda pushed back. It is slowlly making a comeback as are the reunions of the great 70's & 80's rock bands. Just waiting on that elusive Guns N' Roses reunion and all will be right with the world!!

Maybe if you stop listening to the radio, stop b***hing about mainstream music, and shop around for new bands you might find something you'll like. I understand Nirvana and STP but Motley Crue and Poison. Come on! Their careers did the same as their hair, it deflated.

I agree - I have tried to listen to recent rock (Year 2000 - now) & it is just awful. How can you listen to Fall Out Boy when you've experienced Jimi Hendrix ? How does My Chemical Romance even compare to AC/DC ? Nickelback to Pink Floyd ? AIC to BOSTON ? It just doesn't.
Young listeners are being sold crap, fast food, disposable music which lacks quality or substance. It is easily forgotten as soon as a new batch of lighweight songs hit the charts.
The award shows are a joke as these talentless bands/musicians trot up to the stage & collect their award for crap music. I don't even watch anymore.
Listen to the rock bands/musicians which really meant something years ago. Go to the concerts & shake hands with those who knew how to write songs. You don't have to put up with garbage rock !!!

There is ALOT of great rock music being made today. You just have to stop being lazy and look for it. You will never hear it on the radio or see it on MTV, though- but it is there. I am discovering new bands that blow me away all the time. You just have to start looking deeper and get away from the mainstream.

I disagree that Poison can in any way be called "good music," and while I do enjoy AC/DC, I certainly don't go to them for "strong lyrics."
So explain how you not finding any good music is anyone else's fault. Listing off a bunch of crappy radio bands to prove a point is like eating fast food all day and complaining that there's no more good food in the world.

The Homos Boys?! LOL. Well dude it just because of changes. These were all brought by and effect of changes. I'm not that old, I'm on my mid-20's but I'm proud to say that I prefer to listen to those bands that you mentioned than what we have today. "Whatever happened to good rock?" you asked, and then I answer you, it has been temporarily defeated by Bad Rock. It's hard for me to say or even to think of it but that's what I see nowadays... very disappointing...

Rock will never fade and I swear it until I reach my death. Actually nowadays bands are heavier (if you don't listen to emo bands). Cradle of Filth, Slipknot, Deicide, etc. are still fighting for rock music. If you don't mind, try this band.
