THAT all depends on what country you live in.... In the USA, Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand, and MOST other countries around the world, it is against the LAW (Polygamy)... however, in places like some Arab countries it is common for men to have multiple wives... but NOT common for women to have multiple husbands. In the early days of the USA, the Mormon religion (Church of Later Day Saints) condoned multiple wives, but that practice has since been banned and is now considered unlawful.... A person in the SINGULAR SPOUSE countries who DOES violate this law CAN be and often IS arrested and fined... and any marriages after the first one (without a legal divorce) are considered null and void and the second or 3rd or 4th "wife" would be entitled to NOTHING (except maybe child support if she had given the man children)...

it depends on where you live and if you are trying to have all the marriages legalized. What I mean by that is you can be legally married to your first wife/husband and then have a ceromony like a hand fasting with your second, third and so on wife that ties you together but doesn't become legalized with in the state. If it is done this way you can't go to jail on that ground because the state does not see this as a true marrage. If you try to have it done by a preist or justice of the peace where the state would reconize the wedding then yes. I don't understand why one would need more then one spouce but thats just me.

Yes. The laws are different in each state as to how LONG the people go to jail for, and as to how much they have to pay in fines.

Go to Google and search "Bigamy Law" and up will come several websites you can look at that list laws State by State.

To the first responder... perhaps this person is the victim. Yes you can... if you are the offender please try to make it up to them.. if you are the victim please don't beat yourself up. Or the third option you could just be a curious person, in which case the simple answer is yes I think it was outlawed in the early 1900's. Of course in some countries it is the norm to take multiple wives and to have one is considered shameful.

yes. Someone has to issue a complaint first. Make sure yours or your SO's divorce is final before you get married.
