It depends on whether you are a clumper or a splitter. There are at least 16 species. These are the emperor, king, adelie, chinstrap, gentoo, yellow eyed, fjordland, snares island, erect crested, rockhopper, macaroni, little, black footed, magellanic, peruvian and galapagos.

The white flippered is sometimes considered to be a subspecies of the little penguin. The royal penguin of Macquarie Island has been considered a separate species in the past but these days is considered a variant of the macaroni.

I have seen nine of the sixteen species in the wild.
