I think there are so many reasons that it's hard to say good bye to someone... love lost, disappointment, fear of being alone, hurt if you were betrayed, etc... but I always thought that one of the reasons it hurt so much when you breakup with someone is all the emotional investment you put into a relationship. All that you have put into it makes it so hard to walk away. Also, not knowing what might have been is tough as well... walking away from all those dreams you built around one person.

I am a realist and a fatalist so I cannot relate totally.sorry.
Finite goodbyes, such as death are difficult probably but temporary abandonments are good for the heart. Don;t you like the feeling of missing a person you love and love the feeling of even the mere thought that you are getting together again pretty soon.
That's my take on goodbyes-the open hope- of you will be seeing each other again!
Can you say "Bad bye!!!"

I never say good-bye--almost never.
I always say "see ya later." or "catch you later" something like that.
On Oct 31, 1989, I walked in to grandfathers hospital bed and saw him laying there, not responding, he was so bloated, his skin was opened up in spots with drainage.
I talked to him for a few minutes--I couldn't stand seeing him that way--I whispered in his ear that he was going to be a great-grandpa and I kissed him on his head and said "Good-bye", he died 2 hours later.
The odd thing was, I didn't even know I said those words, it was my grandmother that said something. She said "you knew he was going to die and not see him again" I was kinda stunned, I knew he was dying but no idea he was going so soon, she said "You knew in your heart because you said "Good-bye and you never say that."

Because you don't want to leave. And you almost always have that realization that it may be the last time that you will ever see that person or those people ever again.

Because you are afraid that it truly is a good-bye and that you'll never see them again.
(sniff, thanks for reminding me :* ( )
I know that it is rough now but it'll work out for the better even if you can't see how.

Goodbye.
It's not hard at all.
Abandon all hope, abandon all feelings, abandon anything you feel.
It will all end up slapping you in the face at the end.
Trust me.
