Welcome. I am a second generation Italian-American.

First, find an ESL class (thats English as a second language). Obviously you know a good deal, but it can't hurt to become fluent.

Second, OBSERVE and INTERACT. Whether at work, class, wherever. Learn from people and be willing to teach people about your culture.

Third, you don't have to act "American", especially since this country is so diverse. Be who you are. It is normal to experience some confusion, but you will understand more with experience.

Ciao!

Welcome and merry christmas! Sounds like you have a good handle on the language, and your personality is nice, so I don't think you'll have any problems fitting in. Thinking of others is good manners, and you have good manners. Ciao!
