How does that work? Will a check-cashing place actually cash a check that possibly might not have any funds in it?

It is possible that a check written to a check cashing house could bounce and not be caught through their systems of checks and balances. Note however that presenting a check from an account with no funds is civilly called "fraudulent misrepresentation" and the most common criminal charge filed is "receiving goods by worthless check" or "receiving cash by worthless check." Depending on the amount, those crimes are a felony.

Your bank will not cash one of your checks if you don't have enough funds. If you go to your bank and try to cash a check from someone else, they will make you deposit it if you don't have enough funds in your account to cover the check just in case it bounces. A check cashing place will hold onto your check for a certain amount of time, but they will charge you a fee.

Yes, but it's illegal for someone to cash a check on an account with you funds.

I thought check cashing places and banks had a system where they can electronically tell if a check was good, but a coworker had her purse stolen and the thieves keep passing bad checks on her account.

What's really sad is that she knows these people.

This is a form of "kiting" and it's illegal.
