Codec is short for compression/decompression. Multimedia files (e.g. audio and video files) can be quite large in size. Normally, it would take a long time to download, upload and/or stream such files. Therefore, these files are first compressed then downloaded to a computer where they are decompressed. As a result, you need the right software to decompress the files in order to play them. Sadly, there is no universal Codec file. There are literally dozens of different Codecs and you have to use the correct one to play the file. Your best bet is to download and install a large package of Codecs bundled together. For example, you can install K-Lite Codec Pack Full (http://www.filehippo.com/download_klite_codec_pack/)

Alternatively, you can use VLC media player. VLC can play several files type without having to install any Codecs. The website is (http://www.filehippo.com/download_vlc/)
