The only thing that can prevent you from reaching out and achieving anything is you. No matter what happens at some point you choose to press on or to quit.

define harmless desires.....
a desire can be harmless, yet immoral and unethical. do you do still do it ??
the desire may be harmless but illegal because of some antiquated social norm. do you still do it ?

if this harmless desire is moral, ethical, and legal, some might not reach out for it for fear of failure, rejection, and being ridiculed. if so, then the main reason for not reaching out would be low self-esteem. then you have to tackle that low self-esteem head-on so you may be able to live without fear of wanting to reach out and achieving your harmless desires.

1) Failure - If you fail reaching out and achieving your desire then you can't have it, obviously.
2) Other people who want to stop you - Say someone is jealous or something and wants nothing more then to see you not get what you want
3) Yourself - You can stand in the way of what you truly want

Of course usually it's only one of those that stops.

Self doubt, pride, and procrastination. I can and have been stronger than these weaknesses on many occasions. Other than that, if my desires harm none, I will usually ahead and indulge myself with them.
