Unfortunately they can print anything they want as long as when they print it they believe the facts are true.. Papers print Retractions all the time in tiny print in the back of the paper..(which relieves them of any legal actions) I don't read the news paper for that reason as they seem to print opinions more then facts.. Bottom line the press can print anything and can retract any statement at any time..

They can print anything that is true. What kind of story? A true story or something you wrote?

What would you sue them for? Not obeying you? If it is a story you wrote, then maybe common law copyright infringement. If it is a true story about you, then so long as it is true, they're pretty much in the clear.

You have the right of your own privacy. This law is general in almost all countries. The very first thing you must do is that write to the newspaper company that they have no permission for them to publish any story that you have written.

But if they still pursue with publishing without your permission, then you could sue them because they have no supporting documents that indicates that they have your permission to publish your story

If you are a celebrity you have no right to stop them because you are a news item. If you are just an average person and not central to a news item they can quote you without attribution, like "A neighbor said he heard a gunshot around 3AM." If you are involved in something sensational that is news you can't stop them from reporting what is happening, even if it puts you in a bad light, like "Neighbors said that they often heard the victim and her husband screaming and fighting."

Sue. Slander is a felony, and comes with consequences. The First Amendment gives us rights to speak out, but not to slander.

If your name goes into a public record, they can cite that. If a complaint is filed against you, they can print that. Only if your attorney could prove malicious intent on their part, could you have a possibility of winning a suit.

Welcome to copyright law!

If you wrote it, you own it. Use of copyrighted materials for commercial purposes is still a felony. Plus there may be some privacy considerations. See Benny vs. Loew's Incorporated 239 F.2d.532

They can legally print a story with you in it as long as they don't print outright lies and/or slander you.

this is extremely uncertain that it would be public area. although, the factor of issuing an announcement is to get the interest out, so I doubt if everyone would have any subject with you publishing it.
