Yes, you're right, but notice your wording, in the manner they're generally taught, they're not taught to go and defend yourself in the street, they're taught BECAUSE you can defend yourself in the street, Martial Arts are tools with which you use your reflexes and human nature to put to use, that is the beauty of human nature, it's malleable, easy and accepting of new technique, in a street fight, you do not use the martial art, you use your mind and your mind uses the martial art, it remembers the techniques and you apply them. If you're a martial artist, this becomes second nature, martial arts are a key, they unlock what you already can do and refine it and perfect it to its criteria. Thusly, the best method of self defence is to be in the moment, decisive and confident, this is why a martial artist must be confident, they must have faith that they will use the right technique at the right time and they do. Now, I hope this has improved your confidence in martial arts, this is more logical than the fact that Martial Arts makes you stronger, it does, but it augments and fits more than empower and bolster.
