Ancient Olympics were open to anyone with a few exceptions: - Only males could participate - Only Greeks could participate - Only free men could participate If you are a free Greek man, you could participate in the Olympics. The only question is would you be willing to do it naked? (It seems to have been another prerequisite!)

The Mouse got it about exactly right, the concept of "private" parts is a modern one,the men who invented it hadn't come along yet in the time of the ancient Greeks. Not that people we're bouncing and jiggling down every road, but if it was a situation where it made more sense to be nude-bathhouse,certain types of work,athletics-you simply did it nude,it wouldn't have occured to a Greek of that time not to.They understood something many people today don't;there are only 2 basic types of genitalia,no one is walking around with anything terribly unique. What's the big frackin' deal?

In those days, nudity is NOT such a taboo thing as today.
and... the Greeks were very big on "body beautiful" and it was to show that the athletes were a good specimen and have trained to body to be in top physique. Also, clothing DO hinder movement.

There are more "academic" and historical expert answer than mine, of course. But I think this is a good simple explanation.
