The transistor had barely been introduced when the first objects were launched into space in the late 50's. When I started college in 1960, the first transistor based mainframes were being distributed (IBM 7090 after 709). Anything launched in the early 60's almost had to have some tubes. Minicomputers with enough transister circuitry to make a reduced size unit and still be a computer came in around 1965 and integrated circuits followed with microcomputer chips hitting in 1974-75.
