In most instances but not in all cases. Engineers and scientists use metal sheets to filter gases. These gases are placed under pressure and are forced through the interstitial areas between the metals lattice structures. The gases being forced through are usually something like hydrogen because the atomic diameter is much smaller than the metals atomic diameter and are more easily passed through. It can be used for purification purposes as the contaminants usually have an atomic diameter that is too large to pass through the lattice structure and either stay on the pressure side or become lodged in the lattice. When they become stuck in the lattice structure the metal is somewhat of a dirty oil filter per say. As far as a UFO, I doubt it. Although the alien ships would probably have the technology to move their vessels at great speeds through the atmosphere and therefore create the pressure needed to forced the smaller air atoms through the metal, they would also probably have the technology to fill there ships metals interstitial lattice voids with another element thereby "clogging" the filter.

When air impacts a surface at high speed it creates a pressure right at the surface called stagnation pressure. The higher the speed the higher this pressure. A sheet of metal will definitely block this pressure just as a metal tank contains the air pressure for an air compressor.

It would be kind of like going high speed in a car wouldn't it? I think it would act as a shield, but 'block' it, doubtful unless there were really good seals?
