Is bambi's dad an Elk?

In the movie, there is bambi's dad that looks like an elk, but isn't bambi a deer? Is bambi's dad an Elk or a Deer? Personaly I think it is a deer. But it has the distinct characteristics of an Elk.

All the deer in Bambi are red deer, Cervus elaphus, which is a European species (the original author of the book was from Germany). The American elk is a close relative.
