I need a fish enthusiast to answer this for me. I'm fishsitting for my very young cousin while she's out of town with her family. I didn't really pay attention to him until today when I went to change his tank. He has almost no color left on him whatsoever. There's some left on his face and fins. His fins are droopy and lifeless. From what I can tell, it's not Ich and his fins aren't rotting. There are a few illnesses I know they aren't because I've had a fish with TB and I've worked with a hardcore fish enthusiast so I know he doesn't have anything common. When I changed the water today I raised it to 80 degrees (although it won't stay that way, he's in a bowl-- not my fish, not my choice). Does anyone have any ideas?

For christmas I did get her a 2.5 gallon Sesame Street tank with filter and everything. However she won't be back until after the new year.

sounds like you are doing all you can, with what you have.(rightly)so i would suggest that he is either cold or old(this is when colour fades&they become a bit listless/lifeless)do you know how old it might be?yeah most prob age. There's not much you can do but maintain high quality food&conditions(feed live blood worms, just a little&see if he perks up)if not stop with the worms as he will have trouble digesting all the protien(swim bladder/obesity)Let him live out hie time(3yr life expectancy)
Also add the tiniest pinch of sea salt to his bowl, this will help protective coating/strenghtening scales ect(among other thing)
GOOD LUCK

Ryan has a good answer there is a medicine called betta rx or something like that it is special for Betta's and they sell it in small amounts which is easier to give them the right dose, it is usually a dark blue medicine which will stain your hands. I would change out half his tank this time, let the water sit out to get room temperature and add a little "stress coat" to the water, this gets all of the chlorine and chemicals out of the water if you do not have this then let it sit out for 24 hours so the chlorine will evaporate. It may be a good idea to actually remove him from the tank with half the water and put him in a different bowl and clean his tank with hot water and a wash cloth, no soap. I let the hottest water from the tap go into the tank then stir around the rocks and drain and do again with solid hot water then was it with normal water. Hopefully if there is any sickness in his tank you will kill it. After this you should only have to change out 25% of the water a week. Then tomorrow when you can get that medicine I think one is called betta remedy, just be sure you do not give him to much. Also are you feeding him betta food, that is best for him not goldfish food or anything else, they also love dried blood worms. Good luck and I hope this helps:) Below I have listed 3 links the first is a betta care link and the second is for Pet Co there are 2 products that I have used with success

How about surprising your cousin with at least a 2.5 gallon tank which has a filter and heater?
that way you can get the temperature stable as well

Hope that helps
Good luck

Get the Betta a 5 Gallon Tank with air pump, filter and heater. It should be happy. If it would be TB it would have looked like it's rotting.
