As someone has already told you, you own the copyright from the moment you create a poem or any other piece of writing. (Mailing something to yourself is worthless. Don't waste the postage.)

It costs money to register your copyright with the U.S. government, but that's not an expense you need to incur. You may love your poems, but nobody stands to make a million bucks by stealing them. You don't have to worry. Here's a link to some official copyright information.

You copyright your OWN work. If you created it, you own the copyright. You can also get added protection by registering your copyright with the US government:

You may be confusing two, different terms. What I think you MAY be asking is where you can get your work PUBLISHED. Go to your local library and look at various poetry magazines. The librarian can, probably, suggest several that accept amateur submissions. These magazines will, usually, give you guidlines on how to send in your work. If not, you can write an editor of the magazine, requesting those guidlines. If the magazine routinely accepts unsolicited submissions, they will be glad to send you the guidelines if you provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope.

Do not bother with any publication that asks YOU for money to publish the work. These are, typically, scams.

Good luck to you.

You may not know this, but as soon as you write it...it's already copyrighted. If you're scared that someone may steal your work....put your work in an evelope and mail it to yourself. That way if there's every any question, you have a sealed, dated envelope that can prove you wrote it first. Otherwise, if you get it published, they'll copyright it for you...or you can go directly to the government to get it copyrighted.

Try going to the web site for the international library of poetry. They are the ones that published my poem.

Just avoid poetry.com. Several people have complained how they rip you off.
