YES. The 2.8 Liter and 3.1 Liter engines have an air bubble pocket just above / behind the thermostat. It can be very hard to get it out. Loosen the hose clamps and stick a small screwdriver between the hose and the metal body. That should do the trick. It should bleed yellow water, not air. You have to do this with the engine full hot, but turn it off...... If you don't get this fixed you will have problems with the throttle position sensor and MAPP sensor because they overheat... EXPENSIVE....

Fix it now...
I had an Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme SL 1995, 3.1 Liter 170 hp.... Very near to the Pontiac Grand Am ??

That ticking noise and no oil rigidity tells me the engine is undesirable. i understand you dont choose to hearken to this Its no longer likely to be an uncomplicated restore. The oil rigidity change won't shop the engine from working.

i would say if it didn't get hot before you put it in then it isn't your thermostat so i would try to bleed it out if you have allot of air in the line you will over heat .so i would try that first (it is easy to bleed ) i bet you do that and you will fix your problem..

Yes if you have an air bubble. Make sure you bleed it out.
