If I can't ignore it, I smile as if it were actually an insult for someone else, and then I add to it. This really confuses the insulter and it shows that I can insult myself better than anyone, since I know myself better. :P

You first have to look at the person who said it, and then see if there was any justification to why they would insult you.
If they are wrong, and you are 100% sure of that stand up for yourself. Don't fistfight or act an a**, just state the facts and prove that they are wrong.
If they are right then you have to be the bigger person and either explain your reasoning and actions or apologize.
Insults are just words. A lot of us have forgotten the age old adage that says "Sticks and Stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me".
Admitting you are wrong can definately make you the bigger person.
If you're right, just prove your point, move on and leave the smaller and less secure person alone.

I've never been insulted. At least not to my face. If someone insulted me I'd have to kick some behind.

I don't. If someone insults me then they are going to know how I feel about what they say. That usually doesn't happen to me. =)

I smile and pretend it wasn't an insult generally.

If I can, I pretend I didn't hear it. Or I pretend I don't know they mean me. If neither of those is possible, I give a cold-eyed stare and if that doesn't shut them up, I say something like "You know that's rude, don't you?"
