Depends on the degree of chaos.
If its a financial crash (stock market/bank, etc.), then gold and silver will be worthwhile.
However if its a total social crash - a great depression - then those items which will disappear fast will be the currency of the day.
Ammunition will be worth while initially, assuming you already own and know how to use a rifle/gun, and have the supplies to maintain and secure one.
Later it will be the basic food, shelter, water.
As people learn to adapt it will be those non-essential but often wanted items that lift you out of the bottom that will be worth currency - toilet paper, scented soaps, alcohol, tobacco.
In Russia it was toilet paper that was calling the highest price on the black market as the government supplied the alcohol.

No currency can become absolutely worthless in the present world context. Some currencies issued by Germans and Japanese during second world war became worthless after war over.

I remember as having paid Indian rupees 3/- per USD one.
As most of the Asian currencies were pegged to Sterling pounds, and reconciliation of transactions were done by
Bank of England, US Dollar was considered as a hard currency.

Look at Indonesian Rupiahs and Vietnamese Dongs.
These currencies are in circulation in those countries and
have legal tender ; yet they are worthless outside.

Hm. That's a good question. I don't have an answer but I found it interesting in Utopia by Thomas More how the people of Utopia used Gold and Silver as we use iron or steel. It was seen as inexpensive and worthless, something given to the children to play with. They also gave their children precious jewels and stones to play with. It's interesting how literature functions in our society today.
