"Ibn al-Haytham: First Scientist" by Bradley Steffens tells the inspiring, true story of a medieval Muslim scholar who overcame bouts of mental illness to develop the scientific method two hundred years before the Europeans learned of it--by reading his books. it depends on what genres you like and the age/reading level... can you plz give more info?
but here are some general books that ive enjoyed reading:
harry potter series by jk rowling
twilight series by stephenie meyer (sort of fantasy and romance) which includes Twilight, New Moon, and Eclipse, and Breaking Dawn is coming out in fall 2008
uglies series by scott westerfield which includes the Uglies, Pretties, Specials, and Extras, so far.
the boy in the striped pajamas <-- i haven't personally read that, and ive heard mixed reviews about it, so idk if you'll like it or not... but it's about the holocaust from the point of a german boy
night by elie weisel (if you like history, this is about the holocaust)
Notes of the midnight driver by jordan sonnenblick
drums, girls, and dangerous pie by " "
zen and the art of faking it by " "
(all by jordan sonnenblick are SO funny if that's the kind of book you like...)
stargirl by jerry spinnelli
and the sequel: love, stargirl by " "
Perfect by Natasha Friend
Bounce by " "
Lush by " "
(those by N. Friend are about different teenage girls who undergo typical problems that many girls in today's society go through. perfect is about a girl with bulimia and a problem with self-image but it also teaches a lot of good lessons about this and friendship, too. lush is about a girl who has an alcoholic father, and i haven't read bounce yet, but ive heard it's good!)
books by Agatha Christie are all mysteries and are excellent!
and corner of the universe is also very good (sorry i can't recall the author!) but also has it's sad parts, too.
also, my personal favorite author is Mildred T. Taylor- she writes about the civil war when there was segregation and slavery. The Land, Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry, Let the Cirlce be Unbroken, and The Road to Memphis are all her books and are excellent!
that's all i can think of, hope that helps!!

Terry Pratchett has written a series of books aimed at the "young adult" group of readers. Try "The Wee Free Men", "A Hat Full of Sky", and "Wintersmith".
