This is a personal matter. And also depends upon your footwear. If the material on the stirrup does not interfere with the dance shoe, go for it, and it keeps the warmer part at the ankle.
I prefer the non-stirrup kind since i am wearing dance sneakers that come up to the ankle and the stirrup is not needed, since the ankle is kept warm with the shoe and the warmer OVER the top of the shoe.

I personally like the stirrup because they warm your feet too. Just be sure to pull them up if you doing pointe work in center, as they tend to be slippery.

I always wear stirrups, bot oddly, I pull them up for ballet centre, but I really like them for barre, to help keep the ankles warm.

I have both kinds, and I just wear whatever I feel like. I don't really have a preference, but I like the traditional ones if my feet and ankles are really cold.

I like the traditional better because you can wear it kinda over your shoe and it looks really sexy with a skirt.
