It's better than that mirror thing Time did last year. And don't forget, Hitler was once Time's man of the years. It is the person who had the most profound effect on the world. He has moved the Atomic War Clock just a little closer to Midnight. He is sell nuclear materials to Iran. He is just a little scary.

If Hitler was on the rise today and making himself popular in Germany by appearing to be the Saviour to his people undoubtedly HE TOO would have been voted "Person of the Year!"..and unfortunately with good reason! At that time he was the person who most stood out in the World Political scene as a rising all-ambitious leader to be taken note of by the rest of the World...(but wasn´t in time!).
I think this present Russian Leader was correctly and cleverly voted as "Person of the Year" with the wise intention of making the World take notice of this rather,(if not VERY,) sinister man.
However, just take a look at the photograph they selected of him!
Excellent!
It shows clearly on his face all the cunning and ruthless ambition that I believe this man is capable of!
Putin, ( whose name in Spanish sounds dangerously close to the word Puta, or Prostitute,) is perhaps our modern-day Golem of "The Lord of the Ring"!
We are being warned!

Apparently due to his success in stabilizing the Russian economy and the political environment. He's a very controversial figure on the world stage but is VERY popular at home.

I do not know. That man is really scary, and I do not trust him. I was shocked to see that he had been named "person of the year." I will be checking back on this question for some insight from other answers. Thanks for asking it.
