On TV, when a doctor wants a tool in surgery quickly, they say something like "scalpel, stat."
What does that mean? is it an acronym? what does the word stem from.

STAT is an acronym in a sense but there is a word that it originates from. There are many medical abbreviations and STAT is one of them...it means, letter to letter, "shortest turn around time", which translates to "right now, this instant".
The word stat comes from the Latin word "statim", which means "immediately". Medical terminology comes from Latin.
So, to answer your question, it is both a word and an acronym. There are millions of them that we use in medicine...CABG (pronounced "cabbage", means coronary artery bypass graft) is another example.

Usually the medical care provider needs the instrument, blood test, etc., in a critical or urgent situation.
