Is it a good idea to update your os on a computer, like if i went from windows xp pro to windows student edition? or is it better to stay on the original operating system and just keep on updating that one?

You can't "update" from XP Pro ... XP Pro is as good as XP gets ... you may be talking about Microsoft Office (that comes with a student version) but if you do Update to a newer version of Office it will COST you ... if your old version of Office is doing everything you need it to ... leave it
You mentioned the OS so I'll assume you're talking about XP Pro ... the only differece in the Student version is the licence agreement ... you'll find if you've kept your current version of XP up to date it will be much more up-to-date than any new install you put on

There is no such Operating System as "Windows Student Edition" .

There is Windows XP Home, Windows XP PRO and all the different versions of VISTA.

The Sutdent Edition is just XP home or Pro at a reduced price.

Stick with what you have and keep it updated by going to Internet Explorer > Tools > Windows UPDATE.
