You can keep zero goldfish. Goldfish are going to need about a 20 gallon tank to thrive. 3 gallons is going to be too small and to keep the water adequately clean you're going to be changing the water a ridiculous amount.

Guppies on the other hand- 4 guppies would be okay in a 5 gallon.

Make sure you don't overfeed and keep up with water changes and you'll be fine. :)

You can not have goldfish in a 5 gallon tank here are some reasons

They are very messy eaters and their will be a lot of waste on the ground

They produce high amonia levels

The tank size will stunt the growth, so you should get a better tank

Goldfish can grow up to 6 inchs and alot longer

As for guppies you can get about 2-3 but you really should get them a 10 gallon tank so they swim happy enough and YES the one inch rule helps for each gallon, I myself have a 5 gallon tank with 2 glofish in them (zebra danios) and they are one inch each. I know alot of people tell you the same thing about fish in a 5 gallon tank, it doesn't hurt to research or find some few facts about your fish, fish are quite interesting, I hope you get the right fish for your tank, Good Luck!

No that would not work at ALL. Depending on the goldfish it needs anywhere from a 20-75+ gallon tank with double filteration because of how messy they are and guppies need 10+ gallons. also both require different environments as goldfish are coldwater fish and guppies tropical and need warm water. - Yes, massive ammonia. All those fish crammed in such a small tank with the biggest ammonia producer a goldfish and such a small filter would kill all of them. - They could and the goldfish would win or the ammonia would kill them all first Your tank would be suitable for a betta, african dwarf frogs, shrimp, or snails.

You can keep one fantail goldfish if you plan on upgrading VERY soon. As for guppies, a max of 4, three would be better. You can keep 0 of these fish if you don't have a filter. Only a betta can live in a 5 gallon unfiltered tank.

The rule of thumb is to keep 1 inch of fish for every gallon...and 2 gallons for every inch of gold fish. Sooo...Your best bet is to get 5 guppies. They only grow about an inch. And your really suppose to keep goldfish in a 20 gallon tank. I know it sounds rediculous but for the healthiest fish possible thats the rule. Gold fish put off ALOT of ammonia and they need alot of water. They also grow to be 6 or more inches. most people dont know these things and keep goldfish in bowls. And thats why they die so quickly. They actually have a life span of 20 years...ive had mine for 12 and hes in a 40 gallon tank. So...deff only get a few fish that grow to a max of 1 inch. and no more than 5 fish.

you usually don't want more than 2 fish per gallon. Also, goldfish/guppies are very dirty fish, so the less of them you have the better chance there is that the tank will stay cleaner longer.

a tall 5 gallon means no goldfish, they can't survive in a tank with little surface area, about 5 guppies since they will breed on their own. I would buy 3 guppies a male and two females and also 3 mollies of the same type. live barers are the best for small tanks they are very clean and breed easily, they include platies, mollies, guppies, and you can add a betta with platies or mollies.

with the goldfish NONE they need around 35-70 gallons, the small bowls you advertised if pet shops and walmart are simply NOT SUITABLE for these fish. I'm not trying to be rude or anything im just sick of pet shops misinforming customers for their own gain!

You can have 5 guppies.
(remember they will breed quickly)

That tank is too small for goldfish.
They need 10 gallons, at the very least, so they can breathe properly. Bigger is better because most of them get pretty big.

Other good fish for a small tank:
Zebra and Leopard Danios and Neon fish.
