We don't say such things of which you speak. Americans say "OMG," Texans say "Don't Mess With Texas," and Japeneses' say "BEEEEEY-OTCH!"

I'm from a small town and I believe it's a figure of speech.
And I know things.

It is just an exclaimation expressing surprise.Ordinarily Americans and even Britishers are not very pure in their pronounciations and these mannerisms stick on.Even atheists exclaim like this. This association of God with unexcepted developments or things is a remant of the time when God was credited with everything which could not be explained in ordinary ways.It has stuck on.It is a practice in other communities also and not a mannerism peculiar to Americans or Britishers or Europeans.. The Muslims would say 'Ya Allah!'.The Hindus would exclaim 'Are,Deva(Oh,God).

From the answers I find that almost everybody is eagerly(or is it nervously) hastening to say that he /she does not do it.(My Gawd) as if it is something silly.I pity them.

Why do Londoners say "Bloody Hell" or "the loo" or "wanker"
different cultures that really dont make sense to another I guess,I'm more of a "Holy Sh*t" or "are you f*cking serious" type of American myself

It's more annoying when people get visibly upset and annoyed over the littlest things.

Kind of pathetic, actually.

So... you actually polled EVERY American to see if they had EVER said "Oh my God"? What about those of us that are still too young to talk? Did you leave them out? What if somebody HAD said it, but it was years ago and they had honestly forgotten about it? What if they HAD actually said it, but they were remorseful and lied about having said it?

It comes naturally to me, faster and easier than exclaiming in some other way.
P.S. not all americans do that. just like not all british people call people "mate."
